The Iyengar system of yoga uses direct language in its teaching methodology, based on observation, intelligent action and clarity. A new student learns how to do many of the preliminary standing poses, as well as beginning seated poses, twists, and supine poses. Salamba Sarvangasana (shoulder stand) is introduced as soon as the student is ready, due to its many health benefits.
Because this is classical yoga, Sanskrit names are used to name the poses along with their translation. Students are encouraged to take a few of the Level One sessions before moving on to the Level Two sessions. Iyengar yoga is famous for its inovative use of props, and these are used at times as well. Props include: mats, blankets, bolsters, straps, wall ropes, blocks, chairs, "the Horse", and various other items. This enables all people of any shape, condition and age to benefit from the yoga poses, as the poses become more accessible Students end each class in a restorative asana (pose) to cultivate relaxation and quiet the mind.
Yoga Studio Etiquette:
Students are to come to class on an empty stomach and wear form-fitting clothing so the instructor can observe their poses. Bare feet are necessary for a strong, stable base.
Please arrive 5-10 minutes before class and avoid wearing strong perfumes as a courtesy to other students.
